Requirements and limits
- Training must meet CRPO's graduate-level psychotherapy standard; a master's or graduate-equivalent diploma normally requires bachelor's-level entry. A generic counselling degree is not automatically accepted.
- The program definition includes at least six months, 360 classroom hours, structured assessment and a supervised clinical placement. CRPO assesses competencies using the mapping tool and course outlines.
- For foreign education, supply a third-party credential assessment, institutional documents and translations where required. The checklist recommends WES ICAP document-by-document, not course-by-course.
- Currency: recent graduation/eligible current study; or 450 client-contact/100 supervision hours in one year; or 750 psychotherapy-related hours in three years, including abroad.
- Applications through 2026: final semester, 90% completed or thesis outstanding; no initial client-hour minimum. From January 1, 2027: all coursework completed, graduation within three months, 125 client-contact and 30 supervision hours.
- English/French proficiency, conduct disclosures and liability insurance from certificate issuance are required.
- RP (Qualifying) practice requires clinical supervision. Transfer to RP requires the registration exam, 450 accepted direct-client-contact hours and 100 supervision hours, at least half individual/dyadic.
No Ontario-residence requirement is stated; international applicants are accepted. Confirm work authorization separately for intended employment and comply with the jurisdiction where practice occurs.
Important limits and details to confirm
- This is a recognition route, not a beginner counselling course or a psychologist licence.
- RP category transfer is not independent-practice approval: 1,000 client-contact and 150 supervision hours, with CRPO confirmation, are required for independent practice.
- No grant or subsidized supervision has been confirmed.
Location
- Ontario registration; applicants and registrants can reside outside Ontario or Canada.
