01 / Start here

Your first steps

  1. Read the psychological-associate guide and ask CPBAO whether academic eligibility review is appropriate before accumulating further experience.
  2. Prepare degree/transcript, course-content and supervised-experience evidence; confirm the foreign assessment service and documents required for your country.
  3. Confirm current rules and recognition alternatives with CPBAO at 416-961-8817 before paying or arranging supervision.

Individual applications. Academic eligibility review can precede completion of the four-year experience requirement.

Requirements and limits

  • An acceptable psychology master's is required. Entry to that program must have required at least 576 undergraduate psychology instruction hours. The program must meet specified assessment, intervention, ethics, research and psychology-content standards, include supervised practicum/internship and at least one resident graduate academic year or equivalent.
  • Foreign academic equivalence and any substantially-similar-program assessment are individual. A generic psychology degree or unrelated counselling credential is insufficient without CPBAO approval.
  • The four-year experience stage must be supervised, documented by supervisors and acceptable to CPBAO; it cannot be the applicant's own private practice.
  • The subsequent authorized Ontario stage requires a certificate and two autonomous-practice College supervisors; complete EPPP, jurisprudence/ethics and oral examinations plus any assigned training.
  • Meet language, suitability and good-character conditions. Foreign degree-level evaluation does not replace CPBAO's content review.

Certificate issuance requires Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or lawful authorization to practise. Prior overseas work is assessed individually.
