Your first steps

  1. Compare your professional master’s coursework and clinical hours against CASLPO’s SLP Academic Equivalency Framework.
  2. Use the international application guide to request the correct credential report and direct-source documents.
  3. Apply to CASLPO for assessment, then follow its exam-eligibility and certificate instructions; resolve the 16/20-week timing difference before planning an exam.

Individual registration applications; exam enrolment has separate windows. CASLPO’s exam page requests international documents at least 16 weeks before the exam, while its international FAQ recommends 20 weeks. Confirm timing for the chosen sitting.

Requirements and limits

  • A professional master’s degree in speech-language pathology, equivalent in coursework and supervised practicum to a Canadian accredited program under the Academic Equivalency Framework.
  • Clinical practicum minimum 350 direct-contact hours, including 300 in SLP and 20 in audiology; detailed distribution and documentation must meet CASLPO standards.
  • Obtain a basic/document-by-document credential assessment from an approved agency, not automatically a course-by-course report; transcripts, syllabi and practicum evidence are also required.
  • English/French professional-master’s instruction can meet language evidence requirements; otherwise approved tests apply. Published IELTS Academic/General minima: listening 8, other skills 7, with test-validity rules.
  • General certificate: accepted education, CETP pass, and 750 hours of patient care/related professional work in the preceding three years or completed mentored practice. CASLPO determines the correct certificate.
  • International applicants need CASLPO eligibility approval before enrolling in CETP. Complete the master’s before starting the application.

Legal ability to work in Canada is required for practising registration; no blanket citizenship/PR-only rule was established.

Important limits and details to confirm
  • Do not practise or use Ontario’s protected SLP title before CASLPO registration.
  • Missing coursework/practicum is individually reviewed; foreign licensure or experience does not automatically waive academic requirements.
  • Initial registration includes mentorship. General registration requirements differ; an overseas professional-association certificate is not an Ontario licence.

Location

  • Ontario professional registration; application/document handling online. Examination arrangements are set by SAC.
