A route to explore · Ontario

I am already licensed as an architect abroad and have substantial experience. Must I repeat the full training route?

Explore recognition as an experienced foreign architect

Your starting point

Ask OAA whether a reciprocal agreement fits your existing licence before choosing an assessment route. If BEFA applies, compare its experience criteria with your practice history.

A pathway helps you explore. It does not decide eligibility or guarantee admission, funding, licensing or work. Each program has its own checked date.

01 / Start with your situation

Your first steps

  1. Ask OAA whether a reciprocal agreement fits your existing licence before choosing an assessment route. If BEFA applies, compare its experience criteria with your practice history.
  2. Ask CACB to confirm eligibility, the competency submission, the Canadian-practice requirement before interview and full assessment cost.
  3. Confirm remaining Ontario licensing requirements with OAA. Use JVS employment support separately if eligible and seek financing against an assessed plan.

02 / Compare real options

Programs and organizations to explore

Open a program to see requirements, costs, funding and the official starting point.

03 / Check affordability

Possible funding

These are leads to assess individually. Loans must be repaid, and grants have conditions.

04 / Before you commit

Important distinctions

  • BEFA is for experienced, licensed foreign architects; it is not a general graduate bridge.
  • BEFA certification and admission to Ontario professional practice are separate decisions. Job support does not guarantee qualifying Canadian experience.
